Spotting the Forty Mile Herd

This photograph was taken near the Top of the World Highway this summer as the Forty Mile Herd made its annual trek through the area. After reading Lost in the Barrens as a child, seeing a travelling herd was on my life's bucket list so I felt very fortunate. It's one of the few herds whose population is relatively stable (others have declined by 90%), making the sighting even sweeter. The green haze in the background is due to forest fire smoke, which made the whole experience even more dream-like.
